LCoS and the LG brand of DLP television

Jun 4, 2004 2:43AM PDT

Does anyone know who is marketing the new LCos technology--what brands is best?--is it back on the market yet? Do you think the bugs have been worked out or is it better to wait?

We are in the market for a new big screen--We are looking at Samsung DLP, LG DLP, or Sony Wega. But then, I started reading about the new LCoS technology and C-Net and others were indicating that it will likely blow all rear projection out of the box for price and quality. I think that Philips has an LCoS screen on the market now but I don't know if it is still in the testing stages and whether it is too early to jump in. What do you all think? Anyone know anything about the LG brand? They have a real nice looking DLP with a second generation TI chip.Thanks.

Too bad we don't have the search function on these forum anymore; But we had some talks on this subject. I don't know if you have seen my replied to you or not. In there I mention the fact that the projection lamp was not very reliable. The thing lasted about 6 months and the work time is way under what it is suppose to be, in my estimation (samsung dlp). The lamp is actually made by toshiba but the price they ask is a bit over price (especially when the life is so short); just my opinion.
From what I understand, LCOS is out but it's just that the price hasn't come down yet (maybe a little window shopping this week end..and I don't mean MS either, hehe.

Philips has had a couple of LCoS TV's on the market for a few months and have just updated their web site with their 3rd generation Cineos TV's.

I know that the 2nd Generation models came down in price significantly last month in anticipation of their new releases which are due to hit the market on July 1...but there is still a lack of technical specs on the 3rd generation produts.

I recently took delivery of the 44' LG
DLP TV and so far so good except for
this little black spot in the lower
right hand corner. I appears to be
some lint/dirt behind the screen. It
might have snuck in their during the
build of it so I'm having Best Buy
bring out a replacement. But, let tell
you that the picture is GREAT!!! I
have an xbox and DVD player hooked up
via component and the picture offers hi
res vivid colors, sharp-clear images,
beautiful lighting (thx to DLP), and
good contrast. The TV looks really
good even at an angle. I have my TV
positioned so that if you move 3-6 feet
in any direction in my living room the
picture still looks the same. Also,
compared to the Samsung models, the DVD
is good but not great. The samsung
DLP's have this very bad "grainy"
effect going on and you can actually
see the pixels. The LG displays the
pixels much tighter and clearer and the
color is really good to. Of course, if
you want the best DVD picture on the
market, you need to get a DVD player
with a DVI connection. The only thing
I'm worried about is the new Toshiba
DLP's with the new chip looking
significantly better than the LG.
Everyone knows that Toshiba makes the
best DLP's hands down. But, if I had
to rate, I'd say the LG looks better
than the offerings from Samsung,
Phillips, Zenith, Panasonic, and some
of the Sony's (non Wega models).
Lastly, I'm getting Comcast HD tomorrow
and that will ultimately decide whether
I love the TV or hate it. If the HD
picture doesn't look good then I
probably will take the TV back and wait
for the Toshiba.

I have been following the technology, LCos's main claim to fame is that they can integrate more pixels in the same surface area than DLP, but this does not mean that they are superior - not yet. DLP has very good resolution, go to the showroom and look.
PS make sure you view the latest generatiuon DLP 2 chips. I wouldn't make a major investment in it for at least 6 more months - assuming we see some sets. the only one I found, a phillips, was not as good a set as the better DLP's.
I have seen some of the 3rd generation DLP's, and they looked very good. If I had my way, LCD flat panel (not LCD projection) would be the most reliable as it has no moving parts, but they are not there yet.

LG Brand

LG stands for Lucky Goldstar. Zenith was bought buy LG. Remember when you bought your first cheap microwave? Was it a Goldstar?
The Sony Wega 42"rear lcd and the LG "42 lcd rear projestion are simiular tv's, but if the lamp goes out on the LG your screwed. If the lamp goes out on the Song you can replace the lamp for $250 bucks and you have a new TV. That is what I was told by a TV store guy. I liked the 42" Sony rear projection LCD but I'll wait for them to come down. I went into the store looking for a Samsung 26" directview and I think the TV guy wanted to up sell me. I went to Circuit City and bought one for $663.

I wouldn't touch a LG, Zenith, or RCA dlp!
Go with samsung, toshiba, or mitsu, and i even hear panasonics new dlp is very nice as well.

As far as LCOS goes it def has the potential to outdo everyone else on picture quality. check out the brillian corporation and there new 2nd Gen LCOS. We were going to carry it but since they were not able to mass produce it in time we dropped the contract.

Right now JVC has the best lcos out but phillips and a couple of others have them too.

But the new Samsung Pedstal coming out next month should blow everything else away thats on the market now.
