LCD Monitor Crackles when OFF

by Siye / July 1, 2009 4:48 PM PDT

Hi there.

I own a new LG W2253V LCD monitor, and I have a very annoying issue with it. When I turn the thing off... the static electricity from cooling crackles and pops for the LONGEST time. Up to 20-30 min and it interferes with my sleep if I turn it off right before bed.

Is this normal? Should I exchange it for a new model? I'm worried a new one of the same model will have the same issues. I've never encountered this with my old LCD.

Start the process

Use your warranty. If you're not happy and the "possibility" of a bad LCD in the making plus you've started the process in case you want your money back. If its a known issue or becoming one will as more users reporting it and becomes known should may a recall or easier to get repairs, refunds, law suits, and all that get done.

Monitor noises

Sounds like a grounding issue, I would take it back for sure.

My guess is it's not static discharge but

mechanical noise generated when parts expand and contract during heating and cooling cycles. You have parts that do such at varying rates and they move every so slightly. LCDs do have a high voltage circuit but a weak one in comparison to CRTs. As well, they produce a fraction of the joules stored. You can hear the crackling from a CRT monitor for a second or two during discharge when it turns off. I suspect this is just due to the materials used and the construction of some models. If it's annoying enough to disturb your sleep and the store will take it back or exchange it, you might try that.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Luckily I exchanged it for a new replacement in store and this one is silent after I turn it off! Grin
