different reason for being sent. I was told there was a problem with my account and it would be suspended in three days if I didn't update my profile. It said to open the attached file, which was a form, fill it out and return it right away. The attached file had a .PDF extension. I knew right away it really wasn't from my ISP, I forwarded it to their abuse dept. They wrote back to say it indeed was a virus and to delete it. Course I already had.
Hi,All.
Yes, I know this isn't the V&S forum, but you need to know what to look out for lest you be conned into infecting yourself. This particular example allegedly comes from Compuserve, but there have been reports of similar scams purporting to come from the "e-mail team" at numerous ISPs, including Yahoo and Roadrunner:
>>Dear user of "Compuserve.com" mailing system,
Some of our clients complained about the spam (negative e-mail content) outgoing from your e-mail account. Probably, you have been infected by
a proxy-relay trojan server. In order to keep your computer safe, follow the instructions.
Please, read the attach for further details.
For security reasons attached file is password protected. The password is "*****".
Kind regards,
The Compuserve.com team http://www.compuserve.com <<
Needless to say, the "attached article" is in fact a virus. Note the poor grammar, however -- it shjould be "the attached," and "the file," not just "file."
