General discussion

Last night suddenly my Quaker Parrot, Crackers, passed away.

Dec 12, 2003 10:47AM PST

I've had him for a year. At the time of purchase the bird vet said he had a minor liver problem from probably too many sunflower seeds and put him on med's for it. I guess some pet stores just sell unhealthly animals, hopefully not knowing it.
For those of you who feel the same as I do for our pets, who are as much a part of the family as anyone is, knows the grief one goes through, losing a pet.
It's been said to immediately buy another, so that's what I did. I now have a Timney Gray Parrot, Jojo.
My eyes are so swollen from crying I can barely type this.

MzLee,

I'm so sorry you lost your friend. I won't get off talking of the loss of Bradford, but I think I understand some of what you are going through now.

Parrots are great friends and family members.

My daughter's family has an African Gray named Quigley, who brings joy every day. They also have 3 dogs. Quigley began "impersonating" the voice of their daughtrer, and frequently calls the dogs using it. Of course, he also barks when the mood strikes.

Parrots are so intelligent, and need to feel they are loved and wanted. Crackers knew you loved and wanted him.

He will always have a place in your heart, but Jojo will bring happiness to your household.

My profound sympathy, Lee.

It's been a couple of years, but we still miss the two cats we lost in about nine months...

Mark, I know I must give it more time for Jojo to adapt to his new surroundings, BUT
Dec 12, 2003 9:48PM PST

he sure is a biter....ouch!!
Crackers the Quaker didn't do this, even when I first got him. I'll have to read up and find out how to stop this before it gets out of control.

... I think getting Jojo will help you through your grief. The year after we lost my MIL, we had to put down our two cats of 13 years -- one in March, the other in September. The first one went quickly to kidney failure, the second struggled with asthma for months and it was truly awful. We "convinced" our current kitties to join our family before we put down the second cat -- oddly enough a gray and orange cat which were the colors of the others. Had to put down the old cat shortly after they came to our home (quarantined in the dining room). We felt guilty for a while, and it took some time for our stray rescues to show any appreciation for being rescued (grin), so we still had a bit of the empty-home feeling. Sometimes wondered if it was right to "replace" the others so soon. I felt bad about that quite a bit, but we soon realized that we weren't replacing anyone. To this day over 4 years later we still sometimes find ourselves remembering the other kitties. These two have carved out their own new places in our hearts. Those w/o pets may not understand, but those with them do. It's always a huge loss.

May you enjoy Jojo and the memories of Crackers.

I have a mutt (a twin to Angeline's mutt...go figure) that I got from the local pound here 13 years ago and everytime I have to be gone for any length of time, I worry to death that my Teddy will be lost to me when I return. She's nearly deaf now, but still will play and run through the fields with my other dog Duke so I'm hoping that by keeping active like she is that I have many years to go with her. Teddy used to hunt with Derek long ago and gave that up to sit quietly next to him on a bank while he fished instead and stays home when he would go down the drive with his hunting rifle. I guess the noise started getting to her enough that the porch looked pretty good. She sleeps next to my bed, but if I get up in the middle of the night, she will also get up and follow me throughout the house until I settle into one room again....and she is right next to where I am until I leave the room again for any length of time and she comes looking for me. Because I'm a power napper rather than a heavy sleeper, I must make her half crazy trying to keep up with my schedule instead of her own inner clock. She's a wonderful companion and waits patiently by the bed each night just watching me...waiting for her one and only piece (very small) of chocolate candy. Once she has it, she settles into her bed for the night. (She knows when I've snuck an extra piece for myself though and opens her eyes to stare me down for not sharing more)

I hope you find great pleasure in your new pet.

Pets always seem to have a way of claiming a piece of your heart and having suffered the loss of a few over the years I know what you are going through.

I hope the grief eases enough to allow you to fully enjoy the other great gifts of this wonderful holidays season.

Happy Holidays to you and your's
