Laser multifunction and answering machine help

Nov 12, 2008 5:33AM PST

I'm replacing a Brother mfc6800 but can't seem to find a laser multifunction fax that works with an answering machine in a separate room. I've researched the manuals of the Brother mfc 7420, 7440, 7840 and all three require the answering machine to be plugged into the printer for the fax not to answer all incoming calls. I discovered this glitch when I plugged in a Canon mp530 as an interim machine and it takes over all the calls. I suppose we can turn off the printer until needed but I wondered if anyone has any alternative options to suggest.
