Large files!!

by jcom / June 5, 2008 12:37 AM PDT

Where do I look on my Sony Vaio laptop w/Vista to find and get rid of the files that are using up my hard drive?

I went to computer and C: drive but did not find any particularly large files.

Of 64 gig hard drive, I only have 20 left and I am not a gamer or using anything I know of that would use this amount of space.

If I knew where to find the files, I would think I could get fid of them.

Probably System Restore..

System Restore can use large amounts of space for its restore points.. As long as the computer is running fine, you can use "Disc Cleanup" to eliminate all but the most recent restore point. (You can also temporarily disable System Restore if it's absolutely necessary.) In addition, you can reduce the amount of space System Restore uses by changing it in the SR settings.

For other locations where excess space is used, see the long thread in the Vista forum at the link below:

Please recognize that if you only have a 64 GB hard drive for Vista, you may be fighting with this problem constantly.. A larger HD might give you a little more leeway.

Hope this helps.

In addition to what Griff has suggested ...

you can limit the amount of drive space allocated to your browser cache which by default is much larger than is necessary or efficient - I personally don't recommend a browser cache any larger than 20 meg (and keep mine at 10 meg).
