Laptop won't turn on in humid weather

Jul 5, 2009 6:56PM PDT

I have an IBM R52 laptop and when I try to turn it on in humid weather it won't turn on. I travel a lot to SE Asia where it is very humid. The only solution is to put it in a warm place for several hours. It will then turn on but after 5-10 minutes shut down. When back in the US in air conditioning it works OK again.

Sounds like

overheating rather than humidity as I travel between Aust and Singapore as well as working long hours in aircondition room then using it outdoors. Try cleaning the vents of the laptop, and if possible, you could try adding one of those portable-external USB fans as well.

How tech are you?

Would you open it all up to clean all the heatsinks?
Would you refresh the heat sink compound?
Do you do your own work?

Humidity

I do not do my own computer work. Actually, the problem does not occur when the computer is overheated. In fact when it is very humid, I warm the computer for maybe 2 hours to I guess dry it out on this inside. If I don not turn it on and leave it in a humid environment(not hot), it will not turn on.

Then you have to take it to a shop.

As you may suspect there is no setting or software solution to this.
