Laptop won't start after BIOS update!

Feb 16, 2015 5:02AM PST

Hi !

I need some help !!!

My MSI GP60 2PE Leopard had some bsod issues so i tried to update the BIOS to fix it.

I followed the steps and did a flash update, everything went fine, I got a message at the end saying "BIOS was succeffully updated, press any key to reboot".

I did it then nothing !!! All I have is a black screen !
I can't start my MSI anymore I can't even enter the BIOS and I don't even see the MSI logo at startup !!
It's like it's powered but nothing elses Sad

What can I do ??

Ask MSI what recovery method is to be tried.

These are usually custom recovery systems to outright replacement of the BIOS chip or board. Ask MSI what the next step is.

Did you try the usual? Nothing plugged into USB ports, no HDD, one stick of ram, no battery, the generic laptop reset?

Tried that doesn't work

I'll try to call MSI tomorrow.

Yeah I tried that and I tried to resest the CMOS too (not sure if it did though) but it doesn't solve the problem.

Thanks for your help !

Re: BSOD issues

Those are seldom caused by something in the BIOS. The chance that reinstalling Windows solves it is much bigger than for a BIOS update. And it's less risky, as you noticed.

Here's my track record.
Feb 16, 2015 6:56AM PST

I think in about 2 decades (may as well count since Windows 95) I think I cured one BSOD with a BIOS update. That's rare. It's always been something else.

Most common I encounter today is malware and machines in need of some work/repair.

MSI has the worst custommer service ever
Feb 16, 2015 5:42PM PST

Well I had some memory_management bsod while my ram was fine (9h of memtest86+) and all my drivers up to date. I also did many malware scans and didn't found anything.
I read on some forums that some people with similar issues sometimes had to update their bios, well I now regret a lot this decision...

By the way, I tried to call MSI and they are just a big joke !!!!
I've wait 30 minutes to speak to someone then when I said "I have a problem on my laptop" he just hang up the phone !!!
I called again, wait 30 more minutes, and he did the same thing !!! what the hell ??
Is that what you call a customer service ??

Worst case scenario
Feb 16, 2015 6:42PM PST

In the worst scenario, if I have to change my mobo or event the laptop (because RMA seems very bad and expensive, might be cheaper to buy another MSI GP60)

Would it be possible to order the intel i5 version of my laptop, and replace the processor with the i7 from my actual laptop to save 200$ ? Since all the others compoments are the same...

Here is a pic of the processor:

Re: change I5 to I7

That's a question for either their customer service Sad or the shopw where you buy it, In fact, to not void your warranty it's best to have it done by the shop.

last try with cmos
Feb 16, 2015 9:55PM PST

Yeah I'll try to ask them but my warranty is void anyway since I had to damper the waranty sticker to install my SSD and my RAM.

I'll give it a last try clearing the CMOS by removing the cmos battery for a minute, I have to take all the laptop apart to access it though.
