When you say, "I can't start it at all." do you mean Vista or the laptop? Do you have your Vista disk?

What exactly do you mean with 'system restore'?
Why did you do it?
How did you do it?
What happens if you boot?

I performed a system restore on my laptop . I did it because my computer was not running smoothly. I've done it several times in the past and alway got good results.
I went to accessories, system restore and requested a restore point 7 days old. Everything was working as normal, the system shut down to restart and never started again. Now I can't start the computer at all.

My first 3 questions are fully answered. The last isn't.

So my question is the same as that from Ken above. You told what DOES NOT happen: start. But you didn't tell what DOES happen. Let me guess: the blue and green LED's are blinking, the speakers it gives 2 long and 1 short beep and nothing comes on the display. Or something else, of course. You didn't tell.

When I start, there are 2 short beeps, there is a short fan sound, then it goes off. I've tried hard reset, but nothing. The led's blink twice.

That's not an OS issue, and unrelated to your doing a system restore.

Just a 5-year old laptop that has reached it's retirement age. Some hardware failed, and most likely repair is much too expensive for such a device.

I think you are right. I finally got to hp sight for this computer and am trying all they suggest, but in the end, you are probably right.
Thanks for all the input.

Noted in the Laptop Troubleshooting forum so the SHORT version.

"Remove AC, Battery, press and hold the power button for 60 seconds, release, slip in battery, apply AC and retry."

Already tried this several times, but to no avail.

Sorry for the typo.

But no model was found. We know about this failure in the dv6000/9000 and other lines but no reason to write about it yet.

It's a compaq presario F700, about 5 years old.
Previous to my system restore, it had run slow and the icons were spread all over in random order.

Which of the dozens of F700's was that?

Thanks for your help. I'm not computer smart. I can't turn on the computer to do anything let alone download.
The reboot doesn't work at all. The hard reset doesn't do a thing. Any suggestions on just turning the computer on?

Which of the dozens of F700's was that?

I offered a link for you to pick out which it was. We know there is a certain design that does fail and fixing it requires a new motherboard. Your choice to supply the model number or decide if this detail can be shared.
