Get the disk out, buy a USB2 to SATA/IDE cable and get your data on another PC. You might get an "access denied" message and need to take ownership of the files before you can access them, but that's easy.
It might work if it's an error on your motherboard. It might not work if the disk itself is damaged. You'll only know when you try.
Windows XP Pro - sp3
Can't find specs on hp site so used amazon:
'HP Compaq Business Notebook nx7010 Pentium M 735 1.7 GHz RAM 512 MB HD 40 GB CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo Bluetooth, 802.11b, 802.11g Win XP Pro 15.4" TFT'
Everything was fine until last night. I switched on the laptop after a few hours (it crashed). and i got:
'Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
NTLDR: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)'

It is a few years old. please keep answers simple as i am a beginner with technical stuff.
