Question

Laptop with Windows 10 not restarting or shutting down

by mamaocelot / February 15, 2018 2:51 AM PST

Hi, everyone, for about a week now, my laptop will not restart or shut down. If I choose either of these options from the menu - nothing happens. When I try the power button, I see a window with this text: "What do you want the PC to do?" and "Shut down" is among the options. But when I click on that, again - nothing happens. Can anyone suggest some things for me to try? I can look up specifics about the machine & would have posted that here but I am not even sure which specifics would be relevant. Thank you so much!

If in warranty it's a warranty issue.

Here I have to work from simple to advanced so my first question is:

Does clicking the on screen start button, (on screen) power symbol and Shut Down result in the desired result?

No - it doesn't shut down or do anything else that I can notice. Likewise, when I choose Start -> power symbol -> restart nothing at all happens.

Since any shutdown fails.

You have to try the Clean Boot method.

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows

That must work or the machine is defective or the OS is what we call "blown."

After the clean boot works, you re-enable item by item until you find what's broken. Then more research on what that item is.

-> There is malware, trojans and such that cause this as well. If you suspect that, read Grif's list of tools to run at http://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/how-to-remove-pup-option-603542/#post-f742c795-5881-433b-a29b-6d758efe5cd3
