Question

Laptop Warranty transferable?

Dec 9, 2014 5:30PM PST

Hi,

I bought recently bought 2 of the same laptops: one from FutureShop (without warranty) and one from Bestbuy (with warranty). The model numbers are the exact same, as are the item IDs as FutureShop and Bestbuy are of the same company. I intend on selling my laptop from Bestbuy but I was wondering if it is possible to use the warranty I have from Bestbuy and use it on the laptop from FutureShop. How does a retailer know that the warranty is being used on their products or one from Besbuy?

Put it this way

Since you believe both laptops are identical, why not sell the FutureShop laptop?

The Bestbuy one has the warranty, so keep that one.

If you sold the Bestbuy laptop it is unlikely Bestbuy would allow its warranty to transfer to the new owner so it would seem better to keep that one.

Very true

The Bestbuy laptop is still sealed so I can likely get a better price on it.

Do you know if Bestbuy would be able to tell if I were to use the FutureShop laptop under their warrenty? The reciept does not say the serial number or anything on it.

It won't be sealed for long.

The scams for sealed boxes are legend. Bricks were common to get the weight to be right on and scammers are experts at making it looked sealed as if it was never opened.

The serial numbers are different!

If I were you, I would bet on the fact that BestBuy knows the serial number of the one under warranty.

I know that Apple does
