Laptop to HDTV no picture

I recently purchased a VGA to component cable to connect my laptop to my HDTV. After connecting, I tried adjusting the resolution and toggled between view modes, but I can't get anything to show up on the TV. I have an Inspiron 1720 laptop. Anyone have any ideas as to why there is no picture on the TV? Thanks.

Something like that

Yea, it looks something like that, except it said that it is able to transfer a laptop display to an HDTV, so I just assumed it would work. What other options do I have to connect the two? Does S-Video have decent quality? Thanks.

Just FYI

Cable only (wires, no chips) solutions have shown zero successes.
