laptop taking ages to boot up

Hi

I've got problem with my laptop. A couple of weeks ago, i trying to install a cd, it was around 60% done but then it stopped and the DVD drive wasn't reading the cd, it sounded like it was skipping. So i ejected the cd by clicking eject on the DVD on "my computer" ever since then the dvd drive hasn't been working. I then decided to restart the latop but took around 4 minutes to load up ever since then it has always taken this long. Before it use to load up in 30 seconds. The laptop is relatively new, it was bought brand new in June 06. I think it's the dvd drive causing this problem, it also causes the window start sound to crackle up.

Any help on how to solve this problem would be well apreciated

XP has a feature called System Restore.

It's in Start, Help and Support and how most can avoid such issues.

Try it.

That can be a sign of a damaged OS.

In reply to: System Restore

Said damage is usually from trojans, spyware or other items.

What did you use for protection? Let's hope that a scan with Free AVG AntiSpwyare finds only cookies.

I use kaspersky. I did a virus scan and it didn't find anything.

I've moved this thread up, because I've noticed that the sound sometimes crackles up as well as the laptop taking ages to boot up. I've ran several virus scans with no luck. Any help on how to solve this problem would be well appreciated.

antispyware scans

Note that antivirus scans are often not the same thing as antispyware scans. Did you try the free AVG Anti-Spyware that R. Proffitt mentioned?
