Question

Laptop space bar not working even with external usb keyboard

by dax73 / May 5, 2013 4:47 PM PDT

I have a laptop.

Recently the space bar stopped working.
Fiddled with the key, couldn't get it working.
Decided I'd just simply plug in a USB Keyboard as a temporary work-around.

3 USB Keyboard's later, trying in all ports, and checking that their space bar works (on other machines), no space bar button is working on the laptop regardless of whether it is the inbuilt-keyboard or an external one.

Any suggestions?

How do you check to see if the spacebar is working?

For exampe, if I open a new document in Notepad, type 10 spaces and enter, then save the document, it's 12 bytes. With you, it's 2 bytes?

I did an experiment to see if the space was in the file. For all I know (and that's what you tell) it's your screen not showing spaces or a corrupted font. That's why I used a file to test.

Other things to try:
- Command mode. A space between the command and the parameters is significant, so typing it or not typing it should make a difference.
- Booting from an CD or DVD (like Linux, Windows install disk) to see what happens then. If it works then the hardware is OK and it's setting or software issue.
- Booting in Safe Mode to exclude (as much as possible) malware that runs and interferes.

Noting you don't see something on the screen when typing in an unknown program in an unknown font is just the start of the diagnostics I mention.
