Laptop Shuts off with new Hard Drive

Feb 8, 2009 12:42AM PST

I have an Acer Aspire 5315-2153. I replaced the HD, I did this for size nothing is wrong with the other. I used the Acer restore to install the O/S to the factory settings on the HD. Now with the new HD the computer will shut off without warning. The computer seems warmer than usual but not hot. I have cleaned out the fans and such with air. I took the back cover off and it seems like the fan will come on for a few seconds than shuts off. So I assume it is shutting off because of overheating. Are there drivers or a setting I am missing for the fan? Or could there be a problem with the new HD. If I put the old HD back in there is not a problem.

Acer Aspire 5315-2153
Intel Celeron 530
1.5 GB Ram

Acer eRecovery
Feb 8, 2009 1:46AM PST

I used the Acer eRecovery (restore) cd. The only option it gives is to restore not boot from the cd. If you think I need to reinstall, that?s not a big deal. I will not be losing anything. I was just thinking it would be a driver or power management issue. I went through the PM and it all looked fine

I used Uniblue DriverScanner to update the drivers and so far so good. It hasn't shut off yet. I will keep you updated. Also have you used the Uniblue Programs?

Missed your uniblue post.

I've never used that. I do these drivers the old fashioned way if the machine doesn't have a tool supplied. HP is doing pretty well these days with their own HP update system.

If things are working, stop fixing.

Let me share my usual drivers I hunt down are mostly motherboard driver packs, the MS UAA and then the other things.

I left it on last night for a few hours with the restore disk with no problem. Them I booted it up and left it on all night playing music through the media player all night. It was still playing this morning when I checked it. Then without warning it shut off. I didn?t move it, didn?t touch it.

"move" as the clue.

With older laptops the connections can get cranky or you find a STAPLE or other foreign objects in the machine.

To work that issue we take the machine apart to about where we have just the motherboard exposed and look over everything with a magnifying glass to remove any foreign items. Clean it up, button it up and try again.

Sadly this will not correct any fractured solder work. For that you need a very high end tech or engineer. The usual fix for that issue is to replace the mainboard.

Old hard drive
Feb 9, 2009 2:42AM PST

I have taken it apart and checked it out, cleaned it out although it was very clean. The laptop is only 13 months old. I will look for cold solder joints and such. I am putting the old hard drive back in and going to see if the problem continues since I didn?t have this problem until the new one was installed

I can't find the make, models of the new and old hard disks. This limits what ideas I can toss out about what may be different.

But if you run XP, look up SPEEDSWITCHXP and set it to maximum battery life to cut back on heat generation.

Didn't reveal what I was looking for. Sometimes you have a tool called "Acoustic setting" or similar but they don't offer that at http://193.128.183.41/home/v3__product.asp?pid=611&inf=swr&wg=30

The new drive is faster than the old drive. The old drive was SATA 1.5 Gb speed. so let's see what the new is. The new drive is 3 Gb or SATA 2.

I just had to clip a new drive down to SATA 1 speed so let's see if we can do the same here.

http://193.128.183.41/support/disk/manuals/product_manual_m160_.pdf is the manual.

If I look at this I'd want to use the "1.5 Gbps model" noted on page 1-5 to be sure its an exact match for your machine.

May 18, 2009 7:45AM PDT

I havent used this computer in awhile but it has the same problem. I installed a new Hard Drive. i used the recovery disk from acer. Everything is fine except the fans do not work. When it gets hot enough it shuts off. Are there any drivers, options in bios any thing i could have missed.
