Laptop Shuts Off Randomly

by Aces / March 25, 2005 11:57 PM PST

Hi I have a problem with my laptop and was wondering if anyone could help me.

The problem with my laptop is that it shuts down randomly. It goes dead suddenly- without warning.

-it turns off at different intervals (once after 30 min of use, once after 55 min)
-once turned off before windows could start loading during startup(bios loading stage)
-checked processor temp (was at 62 degrees before it turned off)
-went into bios, changed processor speed to low- still turned off later
-turns off when on ac power only, and when on battery power.
-fan works when laptop is turned on, and seems to work fine while laptop is in a windows session.

I have strong suspicions that this might be a hardware issue. Any comments will be appreciated.

And have you done the cleanup as suggested?

The unit is old enough to have heatsink issues, but that model isn't one on the common problems list.

Pressure Dusted Under Heatsink
by Aces / March 26, 2005 8:45 AM PST

I blow dusted the fan, including the area under it, right above the CPU. The computer hasnt shut off so far, so the problem may have been dust accumulation, although I havent run any CPU intensive tasks like defrag yet. Operating temp of the CPU is now at 60C. If it needs to be lower, I may have to remove the keyboard, heatsink, and blowdust accordingly. Does anyone know what the ideal operating temp for a PIII 800MHz Mobile CPU might be?

Still shutting down unexpectedly
by Aces / November 29, 2005 1:28 AM PST

So after applying some arctic silver 5 (thin layer) to the processor and reinstalling the heat sink, the system worked fine for a while, until overheating again. I installed a new heatsink and reapplied the thermal paste, but the system is still overheating and shutting down. I made sure (several times) that the heat sink was properly adjusted; the system still overheats. I ran speedfan, which showed processor temp to be in the 30-50 C range when shutting down. Do I need to get a new processor, or could it be a problem with the system board?

Try a cooling pad?

As the laptop ages, the fans slow.
