Question

Laptop seems to be throttling 5G network speeds???

Aug 7, 2018 9:42AM PDT

I recently bought an ASUS ROG GL703GE on a friend’s advice as I am upgrading from a 7-8yr old MacBook pro.

I have been setting the device up and keep running into a wall that is the painfully slow 5G wife speed. currently topping out at ~1.7 - 3.0Mbps, where my 7yr old MacBook pro will top out at ~178Mbps on the same 5G network (while right beside the much newer device; approx. 5ft from router).

I also have a 2.4 Ghz network that the new ASUS can get ~20Mbps on, but still way slower than I should be able to get.

Here are the things I've tried to no avail:
- replacing the computer with a brand-new device (yes my store has already swapped the entire machine for me thinking the last one could have had a faulty wife card) ensuring the system has been completely updated
- re-installing the wireless driver
- updating the wireless driver
- updating the router software (I am skeptical that it is a router issue as so many different devices run fine on the 5G).
- changing the router to a different channel in case there were too many 5G networks in the vicinity trying to work on the same channel
- running a WLAN update to the intel processor
- running a cmd prompt sfc /scannow scan to see if there is some latent missing software issue
- updating the BIOS
- changing power and performance setting to prevent possible performance throttling

Seriously have no clue where else to turn. I would hate to just ditch the machine/brand all together in case the wireless card and my router just aren't compatible. So any thoughts on fixes would be much appreciated!

Clarification Request
Could this be 5GHz and not 5G?

If so, clarify and be sure your router firmware is current.

If this was me.

I'd pull out some USB WiFI stick and retest with that stick. Once in a while you do find odd router and card issues but I have to swap to some other USB stick and router to see if it's the hardware.

Once in a while I will find the owner has installed some security suite or forget to change some settings but as presented, one has to start testing. Does this slow speed persist at other hotspots?

I haven't been able to test against another 5G network, but have been able to test on other 2.4Ghz networks, and there it runs just as well on other hotspots as it does on my own 2.4 system.

Actually you did test against this router and 5G.

Let's be clear that 5G is your Internet access that goes to some router and then over WiFi to your PCs. The Apple is fine, the new one is not.

5G on google = the new Cellular systems and not 5GHz as in the other WiFi band.
