laptop screen trouble...what do you think?

Oct 25, 2010 11:54AM PDT

I am experiencing troubles with my asus laptop screen: colors look messed up: blue looks orange...white looks kind of pink...
also I get some colored lines on the lateral of the screen...connected the laptop to a regular lcd and colors looks perfect...ruled out a video card problem (i think)...I have attached some screen shoots...let me know your opinion...should I get a new lcd? a new backlight? would that be an espensive option? here are the links:

I don't have a rapidshare account so to ask me to wait when photobucket.com gives use instant access.

While we're at it, how about model number, age, and if it got cleaned yearly.

Almost looks like

A failure in the video ram system.

As this is on the motherboard, get a quote for a new motherboard.

But there is ONE MORE TEST. Use a desktop monitor and if it's the same display then it is 98% certain it's the mainboard.

video card on board or separate?
Oct 26, 2010 3:24AM PDT

thanks for the reply...I hooked the laptop to a desktop monitor and I can see normally...colors are fine...
the video card is 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M...would it be possible to change just the video card instead of the motherboard?

Since the external video is fine.

That points to trouble in the LCD. Those are very fragile things but let's see if you are the person that will be fixing this.

-> Did you disassemble the machine and unplug and plug in all the connections that have to do with video and the LCD?

Don't worry if the answer is no. Not everyone wants to get inside a laptop. Some fear they'll break it but the truth is "it's broken" so there's little to worry about.

Some want diagrams and guides for their laptops. These are rare today. You can look at the top of this forum for the stickies for ideas about how to take apart your laptop. As to re-assembly you reverse the steps you took to get inside.

Sorry, but given your test I have to change from motherboard to LCD or connections to the LCD as to what the failure is.

Ok I am jumping in!

At this point, like you said if it is already broken, I am going to jump in and open the whole thing...will check for all the connectors to the lcd screen first...would like to order parts but I need to find out what to order...
what are the parts that may need to be replaced? lcd? backlight?
I will post as I am finished with disassembling...may happen tomorrow
thank you!

And that's a problem.

At the repair depot they'll swap in a display and if that's not it swap out another board. I've yet to see any system that tells you to replace this but not that with any certainty.

Have you tried safe mode?

My screen has got virtually the same problems but only a while after it boots up. And in safe mode it doesn't happen at all.
