Did you go back to yesterday with System Restore or your backup plan?
There is an issue with Pentium 4 based laptops. This is one of the signs of the failure chain of events.
I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop that I bought back in 2004. I'm running Windows XP Pro, and I have a Mobility Radeon 7500C display adapter.
A couple of days ago, my screen started flickering randomly. Basically, parts of the image will "jump" to the right about 1/2 inch, and some residual bars of color will stay on the screen. I connected my laptop to my TV via S-video, and the problem happens there as well, so I don't think it's an issue with the cable connected to the screen. I don't know if this helps, but I posted a short video to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6X0u-Jaxno).
Also, I installed XP Service Pack 3 the other day, so I'm not sure if that might have anything to do with it. Any thoughts?
