Laptop runs hot and shuts off

Jul 13, 2006 7:09AM PDT

My Dell Inspiron 5100 is running hot and shuts off. I've had it for three years and it is now doing this. Is it to many brograms running in the background? I have to place a book underneath to disipate the air. Any advice is appreciated.

Ususally the problem

Many notebooks with Pentium 4 processors tend to overheat sooner or later. The cause of your problem are probably clogged vents. The best solution would be to clean the vents and get a cooling pad.

Overheating
Jul 13, 2006 9:43AM PDT

I have a pentium 4 laptop and have alway had troubles with overheating. I usually keep my laptop on my bed or on my carpetted floor. Dust and fibers apparently get sucked into the cooling system and block the vents when the computer is on such a surface. This prevents the flow of air and causes the overheating. I noticed that the vent where the heated air comes out doesn't come out with as much force. I've had the computer for 4 years and have had to get the cooling system replaced about 5 times. This type of repair cost me about $150 dollars. Hope this helped you.

I have had two Dell's now and they seem to do that. Clean out the fans with compressed air and run the computer on a chill pad. That seems to do the trick for me. Never had a problem since using the chill pad.
