Laptop question

Aug 10, 2004 6:28AM PDT

I'm looking to buy a laptop....

For those of you who have laptops what is your opinion of a 15-15.4 inch screen for graphics and programming?
I have a desktop with a 15 inch screen. I is quite difficult sometimes to create and view detailed models. For those of you familiar woth Ansys and other finite element software: is it possible to even use it on a laptop.

Thanks

You will have to get a reply on the comparison with desktops but you can order SXGA or UXGA resolutions which will increase the pixel count. This makes everything smaller (one native LCD resolution) but some programmers and excel spreadsheet users definitely want this.

On HP/Compaq custom ordering, etc. (other custom order companies) you can get SXGA for $50 over XGA (1024x768 square or 1200x800 widescreen is the standard for XGA) and UXGA for $100 over XGA.

For programming I really want...

A dual display. Having an external second screen gives me a lot of "glass" to look at. It's super to have the API help on one screen and the IDE on another.

As to details, it's this simple for solid modeling. Even on a CRT it's still some 75 to 100 DPI at 32 bits of color, so detail is not an issue if I compare laptop vs. desktop. At 1024x768 or such, it's the same pixel count.

What to do? Look for the same pixel count you like on your desktop.
