Laptop Processor: T4200 vs T6400... Is T6400 worth $50 more?

May 30, 2009 4:12AM PDT

I am going to buy a laptop, and I have the option to upgrade from an Intel T4200 to an Intel T6400 processor for $50. The only difference that I see is that the T6400 has a 2 MB L2 cache compared to only a 1 MB for the T4200. Will doubling the L2 cache be worth it?

In other words, how big of a difference will doubling the L2 cache make?

I am looking for benchmarks to compare the two, but I can't find any.

The other is the Core 2 duo. Quite different CPUs which I will not endeavor to detail (you do that research.)

My answer is yes. Spend the 50.

Yes but...

both processors are based off Intel's Penryn core. From what I gather from the net, the T4200 is just a stripped down version of the Core 2 Duo since both use the same Penryn core (in fact, I think the T4200 is the only Pentium based off this core). And by stripped down I mean: the only difference is that the T4200 has a 1 MB cache whereas the T6400 has a 2 MB cache... which brings me back to my original question.

Correct me if I am wrong, but both processors seem identical except for the cache (and Intel's attempt at disguising seemingly identical processors with different names.)

Not going to sell it to you.

It's worth every dime. I took some time to look at Intel's CPU sheets and this is a great step up. I can see how most will not see where it's worth it. If you can't see it, don't buy it and enjoy what you bought.

Thanks for your input. Is there anyone else out there who would care to try selling it to me? Happy
