Laptop Power Porblem and it won't turn on

May 1, 2009 5:17PM PDT

Hi i have a Gateway 450ROG laptop, i can't get any help from gateway (they and there support went bankrupt), and i am having some issues. First off my laptop won't turn on all of a sudden everything looks good no burnt things any where, but no matter what all it does is sit there no lights sounds, well sounds yes. The battery in it is dead, i have a new one on the way, but when i plug it in to the power cable i heard a humming sound around the CPU, so undid everythig and it wasn't the CPU but was definetly coming from the powerboard, the wierd part is when its plugged in the Orange charging light comes on like normal if the dead battery is in. Do you think the Powerboard is causing all of these problems, its humming quit loud and changes frequencies every once in a while, i tried removing the CMOS battery but that didn't help, would it be worth buying a new Power board they are like $40, but a new mobo is like $200, thanks in advance and any help would be apreciated.

It's time to make decisions.
May 1, 2009 9:11PM PDT

Just like desktops we have to decide to try boards or not. The cost of a properly equipped shop to fix these laptops is going to run you about 120 just to answer if it's one part, the other or both. For HOME REPAIR your best plan is to think it's all the parts you suspect and then ask yourself is the laptop worth fixing since we can find nice refurbs and netbooks(new) for that much money.

Just so we're clear. You can't determine which part it is given the details so far and it is doubtful more details will help. I offer the above to help you make this a simple decision process.

-> Frankly? I would not fix this by ordering the boards. I let the shop do it since they have to stand by the estimate and if there is another part that failed then they usually eat it.

I live in Montana

I live in a Small town in Montana i am the computer shop really, anyone who has tech issues comes to me. And yes this is worth fixing because i don't want a crumpy netbook, this laptop lasts 6 hours doesn't get hot and is very slim and portable, i also already have a buch of stuff for it. Thanks for the advice but i am going to go ahead and buy the DC Power Board and try that, i was just windering if anyone else had had problems with power boards making wierd sounds?

Faced with similar decisions this is how I choose.
May 2, 2009 4:44AM PDT

Full disclosure. I have designed electronic gear for years and have the usual oscope and more. I also owned a small computer repair shop for many years. After too many years of 16 hour days I sold it.

-> Here's my advice. Start with the cheapest part first.

As to the weird sounds, I silence them with shellac on the coils.

Well the cheapest part..

The cheapest parts is the DC Powerboard which is the same arewa the sound is coming from, then next comes the whole motherboard, i just orded the DC powerboard, the board didn't make this sound until the System quit turning on, so i figure its the cause and if it's not then it's the mobo.

also having same issue
May 3, 2009 9:55AM PDT

Could you please keep us posted on your progress? I too have a Gateway 450 and am having the same problem you are experiencing with it not turning on and the humming noise comming from the charging board. I know it's the noise is comming from the charging board because it only occurs when it's connected to the motherboard.

I just started having this issue today. I decided to give my laptop a spring cleaning because it's been running really hot lately - thought the heatsink was dusty. I cleaned it out, put it back together and now it won't turn on. Hopefully the new board works for you then I'll know if it's worth trying or not.

Thanks, Mike

New Battery
May 22, 2009 4:11PM PDT

Ok MIke, is your battery fully dead or can you have acces to another 450rog to get it charged. I had a dead battery in there when i did all of this, well the night i ordered my new one it died(how ironic) Well the new one was on back order and finally came today, i just through it in since it had a charge and hit the power button, it turned on, then i through on the charger (the moment of truth) and there was no more buzzing, the laptop reconized the battery and was on it's way and as i write you i just noticed my light turned green meaning the battery is charged, succes? let's hope so, hopw this helps you thoe.

got mine working too over the weekend
May 26, 2009 11:44AM PDT

To answer your question, my battery was fine and was fully charged.

I myself mysterious managed to get my laptop working over the holiday weekend...

I decided to take it all apart and put it back together, thinking I may have a bad connection or ground somewhere. After taking the screen, keyboard, and the little board for the power button off I noticed something odd. On the back between the printer and mouse ports is a screw. I noticed that the screw was pushing on some black plastic switch that was attached to the mobo right infront of the screw hole. I removed that screw and tried to turn it on and sure enough it did. My guess is that switch is some sort of safety device where it won't turn on unless the switch is pushed down - that makes sense because the little board for the power switch sits right on top of where that switch is. So that screw pushed the switch forward, causing the switch itself to not fully close. That's the only explanation I can think of.

Atleast we both were able to get our laptops working.
