Laptop optical drive not detecting discs

hi

My daughter has a dell studio 17 laptop running vista, which is not detecting any dvd/cd's, you can here the drive starting up but eventually you get the message please insert disc...
I have updated the driver & i can also see the drive under My Computer, the device status also tells me This device is working properly. i am at a loss, any help would be appreciated, thankyou..

Tried another drive? These drives only last one or two years now. At least it's cheap to fix.

no bob not yet, but i will certainly buy an external one if i can't get round this problem..
