windows XP pro sp2
(im sure specs wont matter)

i have 33GB of hard disk space and only 541MB free space so i start looking in C:/(wondering where all my space went) and discovered that C:/windows/temp folder is friggin 6.88GB. is it safe to delete the contents of temp without affecting anything(like programs not working)?

That's questionable...

Programs routinely store files there during installations or while you're performing various tasks. Most are likely no longer needed, but it's entirely possible that some are still required. That's why it's recommended you only delete those at least 2 days old. CCleaner is a free utility that will help recover a lot of that space and follows that general rule to ensure the least chance of problems arising.

Hope this helps,
John

With Security & Min Info Sent Out in Mind...

I run CCleaner immediately before & after leaving the internet always.
Mind you, I'm using milder (less than default) settings as after first cleaning, many items take a fair while to re-build up. I run major setting cleaning 1 per month.
Do keep checked (to be cleaned at daily cleanings) anything to do with internet browsing, temp file caches, java cache, Media Players, tracking, particular attention to pictures/videos as they can fill alot of temp file space if viewed once & not saved to disc.

Also System Restore files can be HUGE!! Default is 12 % of HD space.
I have mine set to 3% of 80G HD, which gives me 2+ months of points that I manually create daily.

If machine is Virus/malware Clean, I would be tempted to dump current SR points to clear, reset % & immediately create a new on each day for awhile to create a selection.

I wonder if it is possible for you to accomplish a defrag w/so little free space left. Disk clean up & defrag should help some.

You can also get a USB Storage drive to plug in (thumb drive) for under $50 which can hold up to 4 Gigs (suggest don't go below 2 Gig size for economy's sake)) of stuff you don't need every day, & off load such onto it and delete copies on main hard drive to regain space. These devices are very handy and contents are available immediately after plugging in to USB port. Good Luck! Grin
