Laptop: laptop for CE student

May 24, 2009 6:20PM PDT

I just received acceptance from a university which i applied for bachelor of arts in computer engineering, and I plan to buy a new laptop because my current laptop , a Toshiba Satellite a110, is "broken" at the moment.

I was looking at the Sony Vaio VGN-CS215J because of its mainstream performance and reasonable price for the specs, and its stylish design. From reading the CNET review, the problem with this laptop is its battery life which is one of the most important factor when buying a laptop for school where there might not be a power cord to connect to.

If there is any sony laptop like the CS series, could anyone recommend them? any laptop that's perfect for a CE student would be greatly appreciated.

price wise, i'm willing to spend around $700-$1000.

If you aren?t limiting your search to just Sony models, a great resource to check out might be you this new application from Microsoft called ?Laptop Scout,? which is designed to help people find the computer that best fits their needs and budget. Here?s a link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-laptop-scout/default.aspx
You can make adjustments and filter your search results based upon things like budget, RAM, weight, etc. I?m not sure exactly what kinds of specs you are looking for in a laptop, but it sounds like you are looking for something that is portable/powerful, with some decent battery life.
I did a preliminary search on Laptop Scout for a few that might match what you want, and came up with these options: a Dell XPS 13, which comes with 4 GB of RAM, a pretty decent battery life, and a powerful processor, or a Samsung Q310 ($949.99), which has a little less processor speed and RAM but boasts up to 6 hours of battery life.
There are also quite a few other laptops that might fit your needs (and a long list of Sony models) listed on the Laptop Scout site, so I?d recommend you check them out. Hopefully you can find one that?ll work. If you have any questions or issues, please let me know, and I?ll be glad to help!

Thge smaller laptops tend ot have longer battery lives.

Since they lower resolution screens & don't have the game playing graphics cards. A laptop with the fastest components WILL have shorter battery life because they use the battery to run those components.
