Laptop internet slow

My laptop internet connection (wifi) recently took a huge crap. Google has a hard time loading sometimes. I was trying to do a speed/ping test, and it basically just froze right in the middle. I ran the virus scan and malware scan, and little or no improvement. The wifi on my phone works great. Any suggestions on what to look into next?

More information could help, OS, hardware, hook up type, DSL/CABLE? Have you tried a hardwire hook up, from router, to see what happens? Is there any change, wirelessly, if you boot to safe mode?

Hooked up the laptop directly to the modem (wired connection), and no problems. Speed was no issue. Then I disconnected and checked the wifi, and speed was fast. I was only about 2 feet away from the modem at the time. My laptop is usually about 15 feet away. Maybe only 10 feet away. I can't imagine that distance making that big of a difference. The modem is kept in a cabinet, so there is a closed door in the way. Besides that, no obstructions.

Modem is the Comcast issued wireless modem. Laptop has windows 7.
