Laptop Hunting

Jun 19, 2009 1:36PM PDT

I've been looking to buy a new laptop and I am currently stuck between either getting a new mac book pro 15-inch or buying an HP Touchsmart tx2z series. I plan to use the laptop for some college stuff but I would be lying if I said that I wouldn't mostly be using this laptop for entertainment. I'm not a heavy PC video gamer except the occasional tibia. I'm attracted to HP's touch screen, for gaming and the interactivity while lying on my bed, and finger print reader, for faster loggings. The apple, while featureless in my eyes, seems more stable, and although I have the fear that it would make word processing compatibility a problem, I think it would make a good complement for an ipod touch I'm planning to buy. These are some of the motivations behind my reasoning hopefully I'll get some good fence tilting responses but at the same time a part of me wants to hold off and wait for what the fall might bring out.

i am in ur same position

I want a portable notebook for college with good battery life and some gaming as well.

The back to school offer with apple is also appealing to me. U can get a free ipod touch (via mail in rebate)I really am on a $1000 budget so the 13.3 mbp is pushing it.

I am looking at a lenovo ideapad Y450 and the dell 14z (no optical drive on the dell) Both are around $900 with decent configurations. As for touch screens, IMO they are pretty gimicky at this stage.

I also posted something like this for advice, so if you can look at those laptops for me and possibly yourself and give feedback it would great.

good suggestions

I saw both models and then some from both PC makers and I think they fit your bill if you just plan to use them the way you described. Gaming PCs are never cheap but the two you suggested are all around good PCs that can do some mild gaming like the game I posted. Personally I didn't really consider them as a choice, only because they don't stand out to me in function. The HP tx2z doesn't really have any particular applications I need (since I doubt I'll do any actual note taking in it) but the convenience of the touch screen for the commodity of surfing the web while on my bed or in the car is enough for me to take a second glance. While the mac book seems more like a more reliable system with some good out of the box applications but with no WOW features. Hopefully you got a little more insight behind my decision. I'm not really in the position to recommend any laptops but this is one of the links I used to help me in my hunt, hopefully it will serve you well: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/windows-laptop-scout.aspx. Thanks for your advice. As I said in my previous post I am strongly, now more than ever, thinking of hold of till the fall. Maybe you could do the same and accumulate some more money to increase your budget.

Exactly what kind of budget are you working with?

budget

I don't really have a limit but I would like to keep the cost under 2,000 dollars maybe even under 1,500.

Looks like you're in luck. . .

Right now, the HP site is offering a $200 rebate for those who buy that Touchsmart model. . .looks like that takes the price down to about $849.00. That much computer for less than $900 is a great deal.

HP

It looks like the HP tx2z will no longer be in production. Most physical stores I went to say they ran or are running out of the laptop and they won't get another bach since it looks like HP is done with the series. Should I just wait for HP's responce to the tx2z especially since microsoft is coming out with a new operating system? I also did more research on the laptop and there are alot of reports of malfunctions and "quirks" --and slow responces by HP to fix it.

About "in production."
Jun 25, 2009 10:59PM PDT

Almost every laptop you find is out of production. We have a discussion here about how the models are now pretty much one-run-and-done. There are very few makers that keep models "in production."

This is unsettling to some.

There is one more reason to see a reduction in models available. Windows 7 is almost here and once it hits, no one will want the old model.
