Laptop has Advanced XPDefender, Spyguard and Several Others

Oct 11, 2008 10:34AM PDT

I have searched the forum and have tried everything. My son's HP laptop is 3 years old and I really would like to try to fix this on my own or buy him a new one if the cost of removing these viruses is $200- $300. I have Windows XP. The laptop is infected with Advanced Xp Defender , Malaware 2008 and some System Defender. It has removed the icons from the start menu (there is no run, control panel, etc.) There is no access to the internet. No access to Task Manager through CTtl Alt Del. I have copied the recommended programs to CD and the Cd's will not run a pop up screen states "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem. Should I just get a new laptop? or can someone give me the manual instructions.

Tied everything?

Don't know if I can help much, then.
If you haven't already you could download Dr Web Cureit to a USB drive (on another computer, of course) and then try running it on the infected laptop.
If it all gets too hard, why think about 2-3 hundred dollars? A disk format an reinstall of the OS will do wonders. Very cheap. (Assuming you have an OS disk, of course.)

Just A Thought: Have You Tried Using Safe Mode
Oct 11, 2008 5:51PM PDT

to run a good legit program like Malwarebyte's MBAM.exe?? Perhaps download elsewhere. Safe Mode only loads MINIMUM drivers etc. & sometimes stops some baddies from loading so cleaners have a chance to work. Tho by now you have quite a load . See this post:

If you have programs already downloaded, safe mode is worth a try. How to: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

If worst is inevitable a Re-format w/ CD is also first choice. Good Luck! Happy
