Laptop gets very hot

Jul 24, 2004 7:56PM PDT

The bottom of my Toshiba Satellite pro 6000 gets really hot when sitting on desk or lap -- is this contributing to the problems with motherboard/memory etc that seem to frequently occur with this model?
What are some solutions to this potential problem -- do I prop the computer up on something so the heat can dissipate better/is absorbed; aim a fan at the laptop when in use; or buy something like Circuit City's "cool mat"?

If your machine is having memory and motherboard issues, then you make that a WARRANTY issue before it turns into a thousand dollar repair bill.

In closing, some can't distinguish such errors from the errors we see as the result of what you read about at http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/

If you allow pests on your machine or are a Kazaa user, then not much can be done.

Yes, some laptops run hotter than others and even the Toshiba M35 Pentium M runs hotter than the Compaq X1000 (that doesn't even run the fan at all in normal use). Note that manufacturers have stopped calling portable computers 'laptops' for this reason (as vents are usually on the sides or bottom and can be blocked by long-term use on a loose surface or clothing).

Yes, a Targus coolpad 29.99 (that runs fans underneath the laptop via USB) or their coolpads that simply elevate the rear of the laptop and allow it to have more airflow -- I use one of these as it allows a better typing position --but my laptop runs cooler anyway.

As Bob says, if you have having system glitches then get it looked at while under warranty.

Can Toshiba fix their stuff?

I went through that. They replaced the MB, power supply and fan in May. Again in June (sent DOA parts the the repair center the first time.)

They repaired it again in December. Three days later it was gone.

Mine lasts 20 minutes. Just move it a little and it's gone until it cools.

I place a re-usable ice pack, wrapped in a towel then a plastic bag, placed under it, and I can go two hours. Propping it up in the back with a strong fan on it also works, but is annoying.

I'm in for the fourth attempt at some kind of fix!!
