Laptop gets hot and shuts down

When ever Norton runs a full scan my HP laptop, Windows Vista gets hot and shuts down. I have a fan mat underneath my laptop and it still gets hot and shuts down. So now (only happens when Norton does the scan) How can I figure out what causes the problem and how to fix the problem?

No model. let's hope it's not a dv6000 or dv9000 or similar

Tell more. There are some HP models that when you see this you clean the heatsinks, apply new heat sink compound as clean as you re-assemble and hope. You also don't issue any warranty on the work from the shop due to the disaster that is known for these models.
