Laptop Freezes

I have a problem with my laptop when it starts up it freezes at the windows XP screen with the blue backgound and it won't go past that do I have to use the system restore disk or is there somthing else I can do. And if I have to use the restore disk will it delete all my saved files?


My operating system is a DELL INSPIRON 2650

Yes, we all need to backup.

It's a lesson that seems to never be taught but learned.

-> Your Pentium 4 based laptop is one of a family of P4 based laptops by many makers. After a year or 2 the units start to overheat and lockup. I've yet to find any maker that made such an unit that didn't need yearly (6 months?) cleaning of the heatsinks and some would not run for long without a laptop cooling pad.

That's the usual cure given the details so far.

But it may not be the real issue. These Pentium 4 laptops and your story is not uncommon. What's hard to get people to do is:

a. Dust it out.
b. Have the CPU heatsink checked. If it lifts off (common failure) this it will boot for just a variable number of minutes.
c. Get the laptop cooling pad to hedge your bets.
