Question

laptop for research

Feb 12, 2015 7:03AM PST

I've had an HP Compaq - (CQ60), x64 base, Intel Celeron CPU 900@2.2 Ghz, Ram 2.0GB, PhMemory 1.93Gb, available memory 418Mb, Virtual 3.87Gb - for about 4-5 years now.

I do lots of tax research online, lots of excel spreadsheets, and word documents. Usually with a dozen or so open at once. It's seems to have a constant problem of locking up - No Response or locks running some kind of "script" which I don't even know what that is.

I don't use it for games. No facebook. Few pics.
Definitely want a touch pad (not a touch screen), and would prefer Win7.

I would like to keep the price down under $700 if possible.

Your recommendations would be appreciated!

Answer
The script thing is something I've tackled too many times.

I'd reset the browser before and after running Grif's advised scans at http://forums.cnet.com/7726-6122_102-5509131.html?tag=posts;msg5509131

At this age you would be using canned air every few months. If you never did, time to start.

To me it sounds like this machine will get another year or two.

PS. About Windows 7. Don't see the attraction but then I know to install Classic Shell (which is free.)

Answer
Something of an uptick, double the RAM, little faster CPU.
