Question

Laptop for Animation Student?

Going to college next year, however I need a new laptop ASAP, the current on I have is too underpowered for what I want. I'm going into animation and later on will be doing 2D/3D work. I also want something under 6lbs, portable, something that'll last 4+ years with decent battery life (want to be able to play games aswell). Should be buying around December and willing to spend $2500 max for the laptop itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(NT) Did you look at those Dell Alienware or XPS models?

Alienware: too large & heavy, XPS: plagued with problems

The only Alienware I considered was the M14x and it lacks 1080p and the XPS 15 has wifi and display issues.

1080 on such a small screen.

Quite the odd choice. My friends with these models have no issues. However the number of folk that think they have WiFi issues is overwhelming. Gaffes by antivirus makers didn't help either.

From what you wrote, maybe you need an Apple or Panasonic Toughbook. Those have been very nice.

Answer
Alienware M14x or XPS 15

The Alienware M14X laptop would meet your needs as it comes with great video card options. This laptop will work for both animation and gaming. The downside is the M14x comes in a bit over your weight preference at 6.45 lbs.

Also check the XPS 15. It's a bit lighter but it still has great high performance options. I work for Dell so reply back if you have any other questions.

Beware. Posting only about Dell will get you some attention

I fear that you are not being fair here. Unless you offer some non-Dell answers, the moderators may take notice.
