Question

Laptop display stopped working

Jul 9, 2015 5:31PM PDT

An old IBM T30 laptop displayed a fan error on boot, so in order to access it I removed keyboard according to IBM Hardware Maintenance Kit.

After blowing thru the fan I installed the keyboard back. However, the display stopped working - it does not change now when the computer is turned on, while hard drive is being accessed (according to sound and light) and fan is working.

I connected a working external monitor, but it showed that there is "no signal".

The keyboard socket is very close on motherboard to the display one (so I could have interfered with it). However, I plugged the screen ribbon out and reattached firmly. Additionally, since the display ribbon goes out of this socket directly into the screen, the tap to external monitor should be somewhere else on motherboard.

Thus I conclude that this is a motherboard issue.

Please let me know what can be done here. I consider soldering too.

Thank you very much.

Connecting laptop HDD to desktop
Jul 10, 2015 3:19PM PDT

But how can I transfer data from hard disk to desktop computer? It has a Hitachi Travelstar DK23EA-60 drive, which is ATA-5.

Please let me know if I can connect this drive to any of the sockets, that my desktop system board has.
According to manual its enhanced IDE interface supports:
• Up to two IDE devices (such as hard drives),
• ATAPI-style devices (such as CD-ROM or DVD drives),
• Older PIO Mode devices,
• Ultra DMA-33/66/100 modes.
Additionally, there are two Serial ATA channels (3.0 Gb/s), connecting one device per channel.

Thank you very much.

Are there converters to faster ports?
Jul 24, 2015 10:42PM PDT

I also had a newer Toshiba laptop, which proved to use ATA-5 too. So I inserted the disk into it and copied the files via network.

But please let me know if there are converters to faster sockets of motherboard, so that I can use the drive inside the desktop for backing up important data?

Thank you very much.
