LAPTOP COOLING FAN REPLACEMENT

Dec 27, 2004 10:49AM PST

I have a laptop HP PAVILION ZX5180us and one of it's cooling fans is not working. I call HP for the replacement fan (part #350232-001) and they no longer have it. It's a 3 pin fan but I don't know what size. There's a lot of companies that sell aftermarket fans but I need to know the size. Does anyone know what size fan I need for my machine?

The only reference I find is http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00212209.pdf

There's only one road out on this trip. Disassemble the laptop and measure the dimensions and take note of the fan's voltage and possibly the current.

The head over to DIGIKEY.COM jameco.com 1coolpc.com and see if you can dredge up a fan.

You may have to cut off the old fans connection and solder it back to the new fan.

Too much? Try www.notefix.com

Repair fan?
Dec 27, 2004 12:45PM PST

It's a pisser when the OEM can't supply a fan. Only a guess, but the fan is probably 25mm or 30mm size. If you can access the fan, try this until a replacement arrives.

Remove fan and peel the rear seal/decal if present. This is the side usually with the bracket or wires present. Once decal is off, place a "drop" of light(3-in-1) oil and allow it migrate in at least 30min. Rotate fan blade a few times to further work in oil. Wipe any access oil, very important! Return decal if possible of tape over area. Return fan, hopefully it should move, if not, stop don't use until replacement is found. You can now measure for the proper fit if anything else.

good luck Happy -----Willy
