Laptop Connected to Network, but No Internet

Aug 11, 2007 5:17AM PDT

I just bought a new laptop, a Toshiba Satelitte A135. It is setup for wireless, but I will be using a regular router instead. I unplugged the ethernet cable from my current pc and plugged it into my laptop instead. The laptop showed that it was connected to a network, but there was no internet access. How can I fix this?

Sounds proper. Why?

Let's take the usual cable modem -> PC connection. That connection is locked to the MAC ADDRESS of that old network card in the PC until it's changed by the ISP according to their rules. Some of them are simple such as power down the cable modem for a minute.

But your post left out the details so all I can share is this.

So my modem will only work with my PC? This is what I suspected. I want to be able to use both my laptop and PC, so I don't want to change the ISP to only allow the laptop to work. I plan on using my PC primarily, but sometimes I want to plug in my laptop and use the internet on it. How do I go about this?

Depends on "their" rules. I shared...

I shared how it works here in Boston and back in Vancouver but maybe you missed it.

-> Power down the cable modem, move the ethernet to the next machine. Power up the cable modem, wait for it to do it's thing then boot the PC.

Cheers,

Bob

Turning off the modem did the trick.
