Question

Laptop computer not staying logged in to websites. Why?

Apr 3, 2015 2:21AM PDT

I have two computers, one is a Dell desktop and the other is a HP Laptop. Both are running Windows 7 and Avast antivirus. When I log in to websites with ID and password they keep me logged in so I do not have to do it every time. The Dell desktop is fine but the laptop logs me out after closing the website down. I have checked internet options on both machines and compared all the settings and they are the same. Am I missing something? I have checked for a virus and malware but everything is good. Thanks for any help you may have.

What browser?

Actually, once you close the browser, you should be logged out. The feature to remember a user just logs them in automatically when they return. Browsers handle that differently. There are also various cookie types at play. Some such that will remember items in your cart have longer expirations. Those such as "session" cookies are removed when you close the browser. You'll be looking at cookie and history preferences as well as autologin features.

check your settings

check the settings in your browser. for example, in firefox, you can select to clear history when browser close. this included cookies which will store your logins. without knowing what browser you are using, it is tough to give you your specifics.

what I do is to delete all when browser close but I use a password manager (lastpast) to autofill my login info the next time I log on. depending on the browser, you can use a password manager addon or your browser may have the ability to save login info. this may be the best if you want to get rid of your history but still be autologin.

Check Settings in Control Panel-Internet Options
Apr 3, 2015 8:15AM PDT

As others have mentioned, if the cookies are automatically deleted when the browser closes, then the logged in passwords will be forgotten.. Check the setting in Control Panel-Internet Options-General tab. Make sure to UNCHECK the box that says: "Delete browsing history on exit", the select "apply", then OK..

Hope this helps.
