Laptop buying tips

I want to buy laptop very soon.
Since I'm travelling, need to have e-mail, word processing,web-browsing,spreadsheet work,quick-book and also DVD services.
-it is also good if I can use game some times, but it is not important
to me.
-have very limited budget and is ready to buy low cost provided it is reliable.
I have read lots of horror stories about laptop, and I don't want to fall in that group.
So I request your assistance to advice and recomment me which type of laptop I should consider to buy.
I appreciate your advice and support
