What 14 inch models do they have under 500 today?
Let's see those and maybe there's a fit.
About the DVD drive. These are something I could do without today. For portability and one less thing to fail I can add some USB DVDRW drive for about or less than 30 bucks. Then the laptop is lighter, has less parts to fail.

My son needs a laptop for 8th grade and his birthday is coming up in June. I'd like advice on slecting one for him. I received a Best Buy gift card for subscribing to an audio journal and so would prefer to buy through them to use the balance.
1. What is your budget? Ideally $500 or less
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering? Portability and weight matter, so maybe 14"
3. What screen resolution do you want? not critical
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop? Portability (back and forth from school) is important. He currently uses the desktop for homework
5. How much battery life do you need? On and off use through the school day with recharge overnight.
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? Doubt it. He happily plays Mount and Blade on the PC
7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.) Maybe streamed movies
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need? Not critical- mostly stored school work, Itunes. We can sue external for overflow (photos etc)

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop? Hopefully though high schol (5 years)
11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ? DVD-ROM, maybe writer for back ups
12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons. No preference
13. What country do you live in? USA
