Laptop boots twice before logging on

Hi to one and all, my laptop which is toshiba satellite pro L40 - OS vista ultimate over 1gb of memory, as decided to, when first switched on boot up twice before logging on. I do run a external monitor but there as never been a problem before , up until the last couple of weeks. I log on through the bios password not the normal screen.By the way sometimes it can take a age too even boot at all, then its a case of manual switch off and starting from windows did not shut down correctly screen. Any advice cheers
