Question

Laptop Battery Problems? Maybe?

Jun 30, 2013 12:33PM PDT

My laptop is not holding a charge very well and it hasn't fully charged for a while now although the lcd battery indicator shows it is fully charged, but when I unplug it it is about 5-10% less than fully charged. Then after it reaches about 40% on the battery, the laptop shuts off with no warning. There is no low battery warning or anything it just turns off. I tried the hp battery check and it said the battery is OK and has about 60 to 70% battery capacity. Could this be a battery needing replacing or maybe dust in some vents? I have only had this computer for a year. I don't really trust myself to open up the bottom to thoroughly clean out the cooling fan because I'm about 98% sure I would break something.
The laptop is an HP Pavilion g6 1d00.

Answer
Can you share how the battery was used?

Keeping in mind that the battery is rated for 300 cycles you can find owners that used the battery daily and after a year have nearly 50% capacity when fully charged. The warranties I've read don't consider the battery to have failed until it's under 50% and yours if what you write is true sounds like you may have a good warranty claim except the HP battery check is over 50%.

Try BatteryBar (see google) and see it it reports how much wear the battery has.

Parting comment. I know it's terrible to read this folk, but batteries are finite in their life span. If you want to get years out of a battery, don't use it. Keep the laptop on AC as much as possible.

I am curious since I think you answered the same for my question.
Is it damaging to have a laptop/desktop etc plugged in all the time while using?

Please if anyone else can contribute to this discussion please

That's outdated advice.

It's been over a decade since NiCad batteries were used and there were models which had not so great charging circuits but today, the only real battery issue I run into is the limited cycles. The rest is just wear out. Owners ignore the battery ratings and don't think it over that using a battery daily while convenient may wear it out.

Almost 100% of folk seem to think the battery should last 3 to 5 years under such use. When you point to the 300 cycle rating, they don't believe it. Even when it's in the specs and they have more than 300 cycles on the battery.

Nod to BatteryBar for a reading.
