There is some known issues with laptops that get XP loaded on by the users. The laptop didn't get drivers/bios from the maker to do power management or handle the charging proper. It's either that or the battery has failed. Such parts can fail and at 2-3 weeks you should have it exchanged to see if that is the issue.
Just to close this issue. I can not write BIOS and drivers to cure such laptops. You have to deal with HP/Compaq on the issue after you get another battery.
I have recently placed a new battery in my compaq presario 1700 notebook after the exhaustion of old battery. The new one worked well for 2-3 weeks and then the problem started... its recharging is stopped at 10-12% saturation and beyond that the process is stopped. When I disconnect the AC power and the reconnect it, charging starts and then stops after few minutes, the charging icon in the task bar disappears and the light indicator turns off . The system is XP prof on 20 GB hdd.
Battery in geniune new. Any help please!
