Laptop and Ethernet Cable

HI, I have an Asus laptop with WIndows 7, that all of sudden says there is not internet, even though the cable is attached. I had a problem like this once before with my HP and got the adapter.
I plugged that into my Asus ( about 5 years old) and nothing.. I have a newer HP, which I have not used. but I can plug the cable in and there are no internet connection issues, It is WIndows 7 also. Any thoughts please,. Thank you for your help.
