laptop acting weird please help

by hendrixstyley / November 26, 2014 9:42 PM PST

K so I was on my laptop the other day and it froze, nothing weird there it happens sometimes but when I started it up again, the computer looks like windows XP (I run with windows 7), but also my internet isn't working, my computer says I have no audio devices installed, and when I tried to do a system restore the computer says "system restore does not appear to be functioning correctly on this system"
Thanks in advance,Alex

Re: looks like Windows XP

So you have the desktop icon in the Quick Launch area in stead of the small rectangle in the bottom right corner? That's typical for Windows XP versus Windows 7.

My question should have been, does Windows run Safe Mode? Also, if it does, have you tried doing any scans with such as Malwarebytes to rule out something nefarious....And of course IF you are running a malware scan it in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING...not just base Safe Mode..

It's probably time to restore to factory settings unless...

In reply to: not a dual boot have a system backup. I assume you don't based on the above. Back up all your data including contacts and any email you don't want to lose, then use the discs that either came with the laptop or you created to restore to factory settings.
When you've gotten your system back like you want it, I urge you to get yourself an external hard drive and a good 3rd party backup program. You can set it up to do everything automagically at the time and frequency of your choice. 1 TB external hard drives are about $50 these days and a really good FREE backup program is the Easeus Todo Backup Free. That can save you a lot of time and frustration the next time something like this happens. Sooner or later it happens to all computers for one reason or another.

Good luck.
