Lan on DSL

Mar 11, 2004 11:41PM PST

Recently added DSL(SBC)on a Win98se machine. Been using
a dialup, so I just uninstalled/removed modem, then enabled nic. This has me configured as a network. Since
there only one computer who doesn't want to share anything, is this necessary? I prefer to be standalone
on a DSL line. chuck

As long as you don't share files on your WIN98 system (you have to actually right click a folder/drive and selct sharing to do this) then while you are networked for DSL you are not networked for people to access your data.

What you are asking about is a non issue with a stand alone system.

Thanks, Jeff. Wasn't sure. All I need to worry about is what SBC/Yahoo is doing. Checked firewall and system is secure. chuck

Yes,
DSL modem extract the DSL encoded bit
stream, and it converts the data and sends it out to the ethernet medium.
If your PC had a spare PCI slot, you did not have to remove or uninstall the modem. You still could use the modem for other dial-up type of communication, like fax.
