Lakehead University Wi-Fi

Mar 9, 2006 12:33AM PST

Dave H from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada here. I'm 2 hours northeast of Duluth, MN, following up on the story of Lakehead University not installing a Wi-Fi network. Along with saying it's a health hazard, they say they have more than enough wired connections on campus (640K ought to be enough for anyone).

This decision comes from a school who is known for forestry, gave an Honorary Doctorate to Neil Young and had to rename its sports teams, named after a local mountain range, because it was sexist. This is akin to having the Colorado Rockies change its name becuase Sylvester Stallone thought it was a copyright infringement.

Anyways, with my night job pushing papers, my MP3 player and podcasts have become my constant companion. And thanks to your podcast, I think all the public wants is unlimited free content and all companies want is unlimited profit and control.

We're taking off our tinfoil hats long enough to get ready for St. Urho's Day, a totally made-up Finnish celebration the day after St. Patrick's Day.

P.S. - You still owe us $5 billion over the softwood lumber dipute.

Hang In There

Dave, I feel your pain man.

Still, how long can Lakehead really survive a ninnyhammer luddite like this guy? He'll go away soon and people can go back to looking forward to WiFi everywhere on campus. God knows McGill still hasn't gotten it right - sit in the wrong classroom or even in the wrong spot in class and kiss your connection goodbye.

Wi-Fi opportunity for Thunder Bay
Mar 10, 2006 11:25AM PST

Now this could be an opportunity for Thunder Bay. The City of Thunder Bay actually owns its own telco and has slowly gone on to offer dial-up, DSL and moble services. Maybe one day they'll do like Toronto and make the city Wi-Fi.

What am I saying, in a city where the population is shrinking and the young people and jobs have already left, who would pay for it?

ack, another Thunder Bay-ite

I'm at the MNR in Thunder Bay, did LU late 80s/early 90s. Fred Gilbert is a twit, I wouldn't worry about Wi-FI going in, as they will have no choice shortly. The guy is short sighted and doesn't fully understand tech, even though he claims he does.

If he really knows what is going on, he will realize Superior Wirless is going full Wi-max across the street and will blanket LU in a few short months if they don't get their act together.

One of the advanced buildings of its kind when built, the tech centre looks kinda bad with this publicity. It will come to pass soon enough.
