Lacie 2TB 19" Rack Mounted Ethernet External Hard Drive

Jan 10, 2010 8:59PM PST

Hi there, I have obtained a 2nd hand 2TB Lacie 19" Rack Mounted Ethernet External Hard Drive (serial number 572103289) and am unable to access the drive as it's password protected! Unfortunately the company I got this from are no more so would like to ask if anyone knows how to reset the password or access the drive without having to do a factory reset!

I have only tried to access this by connecting a monitor via the VGA connection, if I were to add the hard drive to my home network would that allow me to view what is on the hard drive via my Macbook?

Also, whilst on the subject of the Lacie, am I able to send files to the hard drive via a windows PC and then acess them using a Mac?

I appreciate your help in this matter

Thanks

Jeremy

We use these Lacie NAS devices at a school that I provide support for as a volunteer only. I'm not IT trained. What I'd suggest you do is go to their support site and download the appropriate package to totally rebuild it. There are several packages available as iso files as well as updates. The package you need will depend on a couple of things including the total # of drives in the chassis. I think you're going to have a rough time cracking the admin password if it's been changed from the default. The Lacie will boot from a USB CD ROM device to rebuild it. It's using Windows XP embedded with whatever components Lacie chose to put in it. You cannot customize it at all. You'll need to download the manual and find the default admin password. This will allow you into either the Lacie shell from the console or web interface via http. From there you can configure shares, permissions, and enable transfer protocols. This one, I believe, uses Bonjour for Apple. I don't know Apple so, if that term is familiar, it should mean your Mac will work. It also supports Windows SMB, ftp and http. It does not, as I recall, support https.

You will find working through the console to be awkward. There is no Windows desktop perse but I know someone has a hack to bring it up. You will need to use task manager to launch many of the component applications so will need to be familiar with their command line names. You're actually better off creating shares and setting permissions through the console than remotely. The process can get very slow using the web interface. Hope this helps. Have fun

One question I forgot to answer

You asked if you could view the hard drive from your network. The answer is No. You only get to see shares and you cannot install remote desktop. To view the hard drive contents you need the console and then you need task manager to launch explorer as a new task. Even that is tricky as, unless your admin profile is highlighted, the New Task option is grayed out. You might be able to download some password reset utility that could be run from a USB CD ROM or floppy but my guess is that it's not going to work. It would be quicker to re-image the drive and start fresh. Again, good luck.
