Laci and Connor's Law

Feb 26, 2004 3:49AM PST

Have you heard about the "Laci and Connor's Law" ?

I'm not campaigning for anyone, the following was in an e-mail press release from
my elected representative to the House.
******************************
Washington, DC- U.S. Representative Steve Pearce (R-NM) today voted for a House measure protecting pregnant mothers and their unborn children. By a vote of 254 to163, the House approved the Unborn Victims of Violence Act - also known as Laci and Connor's Law - which would charge those who injure or kill an unborn child with a separate offense.
"Perpetrators of these horrific acts need to be brought to justice for the crimes they commit. The recent high-profile case of Laci Peterson and her unborn child, Connor, illustrates the need for a law that punishes those who injure or kill a pregnant woman." said Pearce.

"Many opponents believe this legislation is merely symbolic, but we need to remember that there are two victims here. How many women would view the loss of their unborn child through violent means as merely symbolic?" continued Pearce.

"Defending the family is part of my core agenda in Congress, and passing Laci and Conner's Law is one of the ways we can fulfill it," Pearce concluded.

Under current law, an individual who commits a federal crime of violence against a pregnant woman receives no additional punishment for killing or injuring the woman's unborn child. Twenty-nine states have passed laws similar to the Unborn Victims Violence Act to correct this injustice.

A majority of Americans support "Laci and Connor's Law." A Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll conducted in August 2003 found that close to 80 percent of all Americans believe that those whose violent actions lead to death of a pregnant woman's fetus should be charged with murder.

In the OT law, a person who struck a pregnant woman so that she lost the child was not guilty of murder, but assessed a monetary fine. If the woman died however, he faced the death penalty.
